June is World Ocean Month with World Ocean Day taking place on June 8. World Ocean Day raises awareness of issues the ocean is facing, and this year set a goal of protecting at least 30 percent of Earth by 2030.
The ocean is facing many threats due to climate change and pollution. Marine heat waves, bleaching coral reefs, and plastic pollution are among the major impacts to the ocean. About 14 million tons of plastic waste flow to the ocean each year. Heat stress during the coral bleaching event from 2014 – 2017 bleached more than 75 percent of global coral reefs. In a separate event, a Pacific Ocean marine heat wave spanned 2,000 miles from Alaska to Mexico in 2014, drastically changing the North Pacific Ocean ecosystem.
Protecting our oceans starts right here in Salem. Trash, plastic, and other pollutants can flow from streets into storm drains. Storm drains in Salem flow mostly untreated to local streams, carrying pollution with it. As we know, streams connect to rivers and rivers connect to the ocean. By helping to keep trash, plastic, and other pollutants out of local streams you can help water ways near and far.
You can take the WE Pledge on the Clean Streams website to show your pledge to protect water ways. This pledge has 10 actions you can take at home to reduce pollution, reduce single-use plastic consumption, and conserve water.
