On Saturday, June 24, 2023, U.S. House Representative Andrea Salinas (D-Tigard) issued the following statement to mark one year since the Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade:

“One year ago, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and robbed millions of their fundamental right to make deeply personal health care decisions. The catastrophic Dobbs ruling was the inevitable outcome of former President Donald Trump’s mission to pack the Supreme Court with as many far-right justices as possible — justices who, despite what they testified to under oath, leapt at the first opportunity to overturn Roe.

“The year since the Dobbs decision has been defined by needless suffering, tragedy, and pain. Women have been forced to carry fetuses with fatal conditions to term, only to watch their babies die seconds after taking their first breath. Survivors of rape or incest have endured the unimaginable trauma of delivering their abuser’s child. Reproductive care providers have faced threats of violence and criminal prosecution. Yet despite all of this harm and despair, Republican attacks on reproductive freedom are far from over.

“Oregonians overwhelmingly believe that abortion should remain legal and safe. It is with them in mind that I pledge to soldier on in the fight to restore reproductive freedom for all. I will continue to champion bills like the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would restore the protections once held in Roe, and the Ensuring Access to Abortion Act, which would protect the constitutional right to travel for an abortion. I will continue to speak out against unscientific attacks on safe abortion medication, like mifepristone. And I will continue to fight with everything I have to ensure that my daughter inherits an America that fully recognizes her rights as a woman. The next generation deserves nothing less.”
