On May 22, 2023, Congresswoman Andrea Salinas (D-Tigard) announced the winners of the 2023 Congressional Art Competition. This year, thirteen students from across the Sixth District submitted their artwork for review by an independent panel of three judges. After careful deliberation, the judges selected first, second, and third-place winners.
“I want to congratulate not just our winners, but all participating students for their wonderful contributions to this year’s Art Competition,” said Rep. Salinas. “The artwork we received was truly phenomenal and speaks to the exceptional talent and creativity of the young artists in our community. I look forward to seeing the victorious pieces hang proudly in the Capitol, as well as my Washington D.C. and Oregon offices.”
Third place was awarded to Jenell Theobald, a student at the International School of Beaverton, for her painting, ‘Lost in the Rubble.’ Jenell’s work will be displayed in Salinas’ Tualatin office for one year. Ella White of Tualatin High School took home second place for her painting ‘Two in One,’ which will hang in Salinas’ D.C. office for one year. And Maya Poduje, a junior at Tualatin High School, took first place for her painting ‘Portrait Through Blue.’ Her work will hang in the U.S. Capitol for one year.
Salinas also opened a poll for members of the community to select their favorite work of art as this year’s People’s Choice Award recipient. With 16.8% of the vote, the honor was bestowed upon Tualatin High School’s Chloe Farris for her painting ‘Remembrance.’ Her work will also be hung in Salinas’ D.C. office.
The Art Competition is an annual event. Students, parents, and teachers who would like to participate in next year’s challenge should sign up for Salinas’ newsletter to stay informed about important dates.
