On May 16, 2023, Congresswoman Andrea Salinas (D-Tigard) issued the following statement in recognition of National Police Week:
“Every day, from Tigard to Turner, McMinnville to Monmouth, tens of thousands of courageous Oregonians answer the call to protect and serve. They put on their badge and, with it, make a commitment to put their community before themselves. Whether they’re rushing into an active shooter situation or responding to a domestic violence incident, law enforcement officers routinely step into harm’s way to defend community members in crisis and protect the rule of law. For that, we owe them a debt of profound gratitude.
“But duty comes not without risk, and gratitude alone isn’t enough to repay law enforcement officers for the sacrifices they make on our behalf. As the daughter of a thirty-year police officer, I know what it’s like to worry about whether your loved one will return home safely – and I grieve for the families of those who don’t. In their honor, I’m committed to supporting police officers in Oregon and across America with the resources, funds, training, and care they need to come home at the end of the night. We also need to do more to support officers once they exit the force. From trauma-informed mental health services to expanded disability benefits, we have an obligation to be there for the people who spent their careers being there for us. Not just this week, but every week.”
