Several trails to close temporarily at Tryon Creek in March and April

Several trails will temporarily close in March and April as workers cut down hazard trees in phases throughout Tryon Creek State Natural Area to increase safety.

The park, a 658-acre forest in Portland, will remain open during the hazard tree project, but access to trails and parking will be affected at different times as crews move to each area of the park.

Most of the work will occur near the Nature Center, the parking area close to Terwilliger Boulevard and along several high-use trails. Work time is approximate depending on weather and other factors. The park hopes to have all trails open during Spring Break.

Trails affected:
• Middle Creek Trail
• Maple Ridge Trail
• Center Trail
• Big Fir Trail
• Old Main Trail
• Trillium Trail
• Bike Path
• North Horse Loop

Crews will cut down about 250 snags, which are dead or dying trees that are at risk of falling. The snags include a mix of Douglas-fir, Bigleaf maple, Red alder, Western redcedar and Western hemlock located within 20 feet of trails. Plenty of snags will remain in the park to provide habitat for forest creatures.

The last time the park conducted a systematic hazard-tree project was 2011. Hazard trees pose a risk particularly along trails. The park has reported some instances of injury and property damage to vehicles, fences and houses due to hazard trees.
