March is Women's History Month
March is Women's History Month – commemorating and encouraging the study, observance, and celebration of the vital role of women in American history.
To kick that off, we want to celebrate the presence and impact of women on our campus.
Slide 1 - Emily York '59: In a time when women were frequently barred from college, Emily York is Willamette's first graduate in 1859. She was also the first college graduate on the West Coast. Slide 2: Norma Paulus '62: Trailblazer Norma Paulus advanced women's rights, education and environmental protection. In 1976, she became Oregon's first female secretary of state.Slide 3: Virginia Linder '80: Virginia Lynn Linder is an American judge who served as the 99th justice of the Oregon Supreme Court. Slide 4: Senator Lisa Murkowski JD’85: Lisa Ann Murkowski is an American attorney and politician serving as the senior United States senator for Alaska, having held that seat since 2002.Slide 5: Karen McFarlane Holman ’90, Oregon Professor of the Year 2010, current chemistry professor.Slide 6: Liz Heaston '99: Liz Heaston was the first female to play and score in a college football game. Named one of the 30 Most Influential Women in College Sports. Slide 7: Sarah Zerzan '08: Willamette’s first and only winner of the NCAA Elite 8 Award — the most prestigious award in college athletics. Slide 8: Karina Salzberg BA, MBA, JD'21: Karina is the first triple Bearcat to take on the 3-1-3 joint degree program and finish her BA, MBA, and Law degree all before the age of 25.
