Corban Men’s Wrestling Drops CCC Opening Dual to Raiders, Tops SWOCC in Second Bout

The (RV) Corban University Men's Wrestling team (0-1) fell in their first Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) dual of the 2022-23 season earlier today, falling to the (RV) Southern Oregon University Raiders (3-0) by a final score of 6-28, before bouncing back to take an exhibition dual from Southwestern Oregon Community College 32-13.

"Lost a hard fought dual to SOU, we had some great wins from David and Tyson who lead the team," Corban Associate Head Coach Nolan Harris shared following the pair of duals. "Although the final results led the Raiders' way, they had five victories of three points or less, so it was extremely competitive on both sides."

"Great to see the guys bounce back against SWOCC and earn the dual win," Interim Head Coach Kary Hadden said. "We got a great pair of pins from David and Blake, and we took all but three of the matches!"

The Raiders managed to earn another CCC dual victory after upending No. 7 Eastern Oregon University yesterday, taking the Warriors to the wire on the road before eventually taking the dual 6-28

Corban earned a pair of victories against Southern Oregon, as No. 2 NAIA-ranked redshirt sophomore David Rubio kept his record perfect in the 165-weight class in an 11-4 decision over SOU's Ayden Wolgamott. The Warriors' only other points scored in the meet came from No. 19 NAIA-ranked Tyson Stover earning a decision against Raiders' Andrew Herrera, 10-6.

The Raiders earned the first three weight-class victories by slim margins, as Simon Graeber, No. 2 NAIA-ranked Evan Potter, and Greg Guzman-Perez all took home decisions by three points or less.

Another decision in the 149-weight class for SOU gave the Raiders a 12-0 team point lead, before the first major decision gave Southern Oregon a commanding 16-0 advantage. The Warriors and Raiders split the next four matches before SOU's 285-weight class wrestler Antonio Garcia took a slim 5-3 decision over Corban junior Sven Lukner.

Warriors' freshman Blake Runion jumped back to the mat to pin his Laker opponent, Garret Burns, in 4:26 to redeem his narrow loss in his earlier match. Senior and No. 19 NAIA-ranked Michael Murphy earned a major decision 8-0 over Ryder Fassett of SWOCC, while Rubio cruised to a 5:42 minute pin of Isaiah Toomey.

Corban managed to take three of the next four matches, including a major decision by Stover, to more than lock away the Warriors' dual win over Southwestern Oregon.
