Corban University Athletic Department issued the following announcement on Feb. 28

Corban University head baseball coach Derek Legg announced on Monday that he will be stepping down from his role as head baseball coach at the conclusion of the 2022 season.

An alum of Corban University himself, Legg is in his fifth year as the skipper of the Warrior baseball program and is currently tied for the second-longest tenured head coach within the department.

"I want to start by thanking my wife and kids for supporting my passion of coaching baseball," Legg said. "My wife has been there every step of the way and I couldn't have done this without her. I'd like to thank every coach that has served on my staff, their impact made me a better coach and a better man. I'm grateful for each and every player that I have coached, it's been a pleasure to watch them mature and grow as men. Lastly, I want to thank everyone who supported or donated to Corban baseball, we couldn't have done what we love without your support."

Under Legg's tutelage, the Warrior program is currently off to its best start since 2013, boasting a 9-4-1 record through 14 games this spring. During his entire time at the helm of the Navy and Gold, Legg has compiled an 86-107-2 overall record.

The squad has seen a number of notable accomplishments during his coaching career, including a few historic milestones. In his first year in 2018, the Warrior baseball team received its highest-ever NAIA National Ranking, receiving votes and ranking 37th nationally in the second NAIA Coaches' Top-25 poll that season.

Just last year, the team made history when it earned its first-ever appearance in the NAIA National Tournament, reaching a level it had never previously reached prior to Legg's guidance.

"Ultimately, my decision to leave is to allow me to be around my family more," Legg said about his decision. "The greatest thing I will do in this life is be a husband to my wife and a father to my kids; stepping away from coaching will give me the opportunity to be more present in their lives. I will miss being at the field everyday grinding with my team, but I will rest in the fact that I have been able to influence young men's lives for the last five years. The program is going in the right direction and I'm excited to see what's to come in the future."

Beyond the squad's performance on the diamond, Legg's emphasis on academic and spiritual growth among his players was a key emphasis throughout his time as the Warrior skipper, an aspect of his leadership that was often lauded by his peers and supervisors.

"It is with mixed emotions that I accepted the resignation of coach Legg," said Director of Athletics Sue Roth. "Derek has served Corban Athletics very well over these past four-plus years, and he was instrumental in crafting a healthy team culture for our baseball program. I am extremely proud of coach Legg and his hard work and determination to make Corban baseball a powerhouse in the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC). I wish him, his wife, and their four beautiful children all the best as they move into the next chapter of their lives."

Legg will continue to captain the Warrior baseball program through the remainder of the 2022 season. The Corban University athletic department will undergo a nationwide search for the team's next head coach.
